The Montreal Canadiens were chided by some critics for their seemingly endless celebration of their centennial, but when you’ve got the richest history of all NHL teams and a legacy that stretches back before the birth of the league itself, there’s a lot to celebrate.Pittsburgh Penguin for men
The Habs history certainly has been impressive with 24 Stanley Cup championships and 45 players in the Hockey Hall of Fame but since winning their last Stanley Cup in 1993, the subsequent seasons have not been good ones for this proud franchise. From 1993 to 2009, the Canadiens made the playoffs only nine times and made it past the first round five times. Little wonder they put so much hype upon their glory years.Most Canadiens fans believe the Habs’ decline started with the 1995 trade of goaltending great Patrick Roy to the Colorado Avalanche, but it actually goes back into the early 1990s.Their draft and trade record over the past 20 years reveals poor decisions by a series of general managers resulting in over 15 years of mediocrity. From Serge Savard to Rejean Houle to Andre Savard to current general manager Bob Gainey, the Canadiens have not drafted well and for the most part failed to acquire quality talent via trades or free agency. Savard did build two Stanley Cup champions teams, in part because from 1984 to 1987 he selected a superstar in Roy plus players like Eric Desjardins, Mathieu Schneider, John LeClair, Stephane Richer, Petr Svoboda and Lyle Odelein, who formed the core of a solid Canadiens team in the late ’80s and early ’90s. But from 1988 to 1995, Savard never achieved the same level of success at the draft table as in his earlier seasons, which set in motion the Habs’ inevitable decline. He was also responsible for two of the most lopsided deals in NHL history. The first was dealing away superstar defenseman Chris Chelios to Chicago in 1990 for fading scorer Denis Savard, the other was packaging LeClair and Desjardins to Philadelphia in 1995 for forward Mark Recchi.Those trades significantly improved the Blackhawks and Flyers respectively but did little to help the Canadiens.Houle took over for Savard as GM in 1995 and was forced to trade Roy following his falling out with then-head coach Mario Tremblay. The return of Jocelyn Thibault, Martin Rucinsky and Andrei Kovalenko was another blunder for Montreal while Roy went on to further pad his Hall of Fame resume with the Colorado Avalanche.cheap Pittsburgh Penguins The Canadiens were heading into decline prior to the Roy trade but that move accelerated the process.Other notable players dealt away by Houle, including Schneider, Pierre Turgeon, Craig Conroy and Darcy Tucker, also went on to better things with new teams while Montreal got little in return. Unfortunately, the reality is few notable players during this decade have come through their system and none could be considered franchise players. Mike Komisarek, Tomas Plekanec, Mark Streit, Carey Price and Andrei Kostitsyn are the few notables selected since 2001 thus far to go on to NHL careers with the Habs.Price is still trying to establish himself as a starting goalie, Plekanec is a solid second-line center who could depart next summer via free agency and Kostitsyn’s performance since a promising 53-point effort in 2007-08 has sharply declined. Komisarek and Streit were lost to free agency.Men’s Chicago Blackhawks This season, the Habs’ best players came from other teams via unrestricted free agency last summer and likely because they were among the few teams willing to spend the big bucks to land them.In previous years, the top free-agent talent shunned Montreal for a variety of reasons, but the biggest factor was the fish bowl existence of a Canadien as fans and media seemingly watch their every move on and off the ice. It’s been almost impossible in this decade for the Canadiens to land quality players via trades, partly because of the salary cap but also because they’ve had little to offer up in return. Great management was why the Canadiens for much of their 100 years consistently had great teams. But going on 17 years since the last Stanley Cup parade in Montreal, it’s apparent their management over that time has been anything but great. Until the Canadiens resolve this problem, they’ll remain mired in mediocrity and wallowing in past glory.

Sit back, relax and enjoy the ride the rest of this season and worry about next year when it’s time. “What the fans have to realize is if you have the nucleus, you can fill in,” Wirtz said Thursday. “But what would happen if we hadn’t had this nucleus and let these three gentlemen go to another team? Then they’d (fans) really be nervous. “We’re lucky to have players that want to play for us. Any other team in this league would have taken these players off our hands. They would have no problem doing that.” The Hawks certainly have what they believe is their core locked up now for at least the next two years and well beyond in some cases in Keith, Toews, Kane, Marian Hossa, Cristobal Huet, Brian Campbell and Kris Versteeg. General manager Stan Bowman knows he has some tough decisions ahead after the season, but there’s a Stanley Cup to be won first, and the Hawks would like to think they have a great shot at getting it. “People fall in love with this team and we do, too, but this is not a phenomenon that just the Blackhawks face,” Bowman said. “We’re playing under the same rules as Pittsburgh, Detroit and Washington, so when you say we’re going to have tough decisions this summer, that’s correct, but last summer we saw teams let players go. “I’m sure they weren’t thrilled about it, but those are the rules and we’re all playing under this system. “Decisions have to be made and we’ll make the right ones at the right time, but we don’t need to get ahead of ourselves now.” These definitely are not Rocky Wirtz’s father’s Blackhawks, and the son knows it. chicago blackhawks for menIn signing Keith for 13 years at $72 million and Toews and Kane for five years at $31.5 million each on the heels of Hossa’s 12-year, $62.8 million deal, Wirtz admitted they are the kind of bold moves that wouldn’t have happened in the past when Bill Wirtz, his father, was the boss. “I don’t know if the Hawks would have made a commitment to players in the past, and I think it’s important to do that,” Wirtz said. “If you looked at where we came from two years ago, if I said we’d be standing here in the Stadium Club talking about signing two players for five years and another for 13, you’re thinking I’m drinking all the whiskey we sell, or smoking some. “But what it’s really been is if the fans didn’t show up, we couldn’t do it. If we didn’t have the outpouring, the 14,000-plus season-ticket holders, if we didn’t have standing room being sold every night, if we didn’t have this real excitement, we couldn’t do it. “With that commitment it certainly made the decision easy for us.” Bowman said that despite numerous reports claiming the Hawks needed to clear “tagging room” salary-cap space for next season, the numbers for Keith, Toews and Kane fit into the NHL’s complex formula. That doesn’t mean making it work was easy. Bowman and assistant GM Kevin Cheveldayoff even flew to Toronto to meet with the league’s cap people in order to get the contracts approved. “There is a league formula and we spent days going over this with the league making sure we understood how they computed it and making sure that everything would work, and it did,” Bowman said. “This today is not impacting the current team at all. We can play with this team for the rest of the year, and we may choose to do that. We’ll evaluate things as they come and if we find a way to do something that would help us we’ll go down that road, but we may not.” Keith’s contract will take him to the age of 39. “It’s great knowing I’m going to be a Blackhawk for the rest of my career,” Keith said. None of the returns for these prospects would denote a “steal” for the team that jettisoned the youngsters.Tangradi, who was on fire with the Ontario League’s Belleville Bulls when he was traded, went to Pittsburgh alongside Chris Kunitz for Ryan Whitney, who became an Anaheim Duck in the process. Kunitz was nearly a point-per-game player for the rest of the regular season for the Pens and helped them win the Stanley Cup. Whitney’s a great young defenseman, but I’m sure Pittsburgh’s not sweating the deal right now, especially since Tangradi is only a year or two away from the NHL.Another Ducks pick gone via trade is center Eric O’Dell, who was sent to Atlanta at the trade deadline a year after he was drafted for Erik Christensen, who was waived by Anaheim earlier this season.Detroit Red Wings for menMcDonagh, a Montreal Canadiens first-rounder in 2007 whose inclusion in the Scott Gomez trade immediately caused indigestion for Habs fans, is another example of a player gone too soon. A defenseman who plays a balanced game, the University of Wisconsin junior is on pace for his best offensive totals yet and it cannot be said either team won that deal. Both the Habs and Rangers are struggling, with Gomez posting the worst offensive totals of his career and Chris Higgins (who went to New York) doing the same on Broadway. But at least the Rangers can pin future hopes on McDonagh.Rask was infamously dealt by the Maple Leafs for fellow goaltender Andrew Raycroft, whose tenure in Toronto was an overall disaster, even if he technically holds the team record for wins in a season (playing 72 games certainly helps, as does the introduction of shootout victories).So why give up so early, given the history? I can understand giving up draft slots in exchange for players; the other team will likely choose a completely different player, so you’re not forever married to one particular name. But someone in the organization saw something in these young men and they weren’t wrong when they saw it. A little bit of patience would help enormously.In fact, Carolina has precedent for this when it traded Jack Johnson away when the defenseman didn’t want to leave the University of Michigan early.  Hands off NHL award history Time to update award names For profiles, news and views from the hockey world, check out The Hockey News.Perhaps that’s why it shouldn’t be surprising some of the key Wild players in the team’s recent five-game win streak are relatively new to the organization.We all know the Minnesota teams of the past were defense focused, but players such as Kyle Brodziak and Guillaume Latendresse grew their games in the Edmonton and Montreal systems, respectively, so they don’t have that baggage. Hence, Brodziak and Latendresse were quite effective against Anaheim on Friday, banging and crashing away, forechecking deep in the Ducks zone (sometimes both at the same time — it’s a miracle!).Andrew Ebbett has been another sparkplug since coming over to the Wild. Picked up on waivers from Chicago just a couple weeks ago, the speedy center has made an immediate impact in the Twin Cities, scoring three goals in six games while only playing third-line minutes. Again, Ebbett cut his teeth elsewhere, spending most of his career in the Anaheim system before catching on with the Blackhawks this season. The undersized pivot proved last year he could bring the offense, gelling with Ducks star Teemu Selanne on a potent second line late in the season. Men’s Calgary FlamesThe fact neither Anaheim nor Chicago had space for him this year has been a boon for Minnesota so far and his type of game is the one they want to be playing.Early on in the 2009-10 campaign, the Wild clearly struggled with its identity, leading to the team’s horrible 3-9-0 start. References to the culture change were everywhere in the Minnesota newspapers and I got the sense veterans were still “recovering” from the yoke they had been under while playing Lemaire hockey (and this isn’t an indictment of Lemaire — New Jersey has shown how to execute his master plan and the Devils’ 19-7-1 record despite a raft of key injuries is proof). The Minnesota Wild have played much more exciting hockey this season. (Bruce Kluckhohn / Getty Images) Now, the heavy veil has been lifted. One of the first to buy in was center Eric Belanger, who had seven points in his first five games this year and is still on pace for career offensive totals. Mikko Koivu and Andrew Brunette soon followed.Ironically enough, the offseason seemed to indicate the offense would run through Czech mates Martin Havlat and Petr Sykora, but injuries have devastated that concept. Nevertheless, it’s all for the best. They are good, intense hockey coaches who are difficult to play for. They come stamped with an expiration date beyond which players simply won’t respond to them. The Flyers are getting a Cup-proven coach instead of a good organizational soldier. But then, three years ago, the Flyers fired a Cup-proven coach, Ken Hitchcock, to go with the player-friendly organizational soldier. So it may be impossible to criticize the move, but it is just as impossible to get excited by another swing of the endless good cop/bad cop teeter-totter. The real question here is whether the Flyers are any closer to winning a championship today than they were before Stevens was dismissed Friday. And the answer sure looks like a great big “No.” The Pittsburgh Penguins still have Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Marc-Andre Fleury. The Washington Capitals still have Alexander Ovechkin. The Flyers will be fighting for the right to be the third-best team in their conference until their young, up-and-coming nucleus actually performs according to expectations. The group, led by Mike Richards and Jeff Carter, had its chance to become an elite team with the coach hand-chosen for their comfort and development. Stevens, one of the truly decent and honorable men you will find in this or any other sport, had worked with a lot of the current Flyers when they were mere Phantoms in the AHL. He was a sound choice as coach after Hitchcock was deemed too mean and demanding for the sensitive buds and blossoms on the roster. Well, those players now must cope with the fact that they got their guy fired. Men’s Buffalo SabresIf Laviolette lives up to his reputation, these guys will look back on Stevens’ tenure as the good old days. Their comfort zone has been shut down and sealed off with crime-scene tape. Peter Laviolette is much more intense behind the bench than his predecessor John Stevens. (Matt Slocum / Associated Press) The risk of firing a coach to shake up players is obvious. Sometimes the players answer the wake-up call and respond with passion and renewed focus. But just as often, players decide they are bulletproof. Why worry? If things go wrong, it will be the coach, not them, taking the fall. These players failed Stevens, not the other way around. By extension, that means general manager Paul Holmgren failed his coach, as well. It was Holmgren who put together this roster and who keeps it in such a state of flux that a true team identity has been nearly impossible to forge. To his credit, Holmgren acknowledged all that. He wasn’t about to fire himself, and the salary cap makes it impossible to make meaningful changes in the core of players right now. Given all that — a young, unformed team that seems perfectly content with mediocrity and no other options — it makes perfect sense to change coaches. If you get a flat, you change the tire. That doesn’t mean the car is well made or couldn’t use serious work under the hood. It has been 35 hockey seasons since Bobby Clarke raised the Stanley Cup. It has been 27 basketball seasons since Maurice Cheeks’ ecstatic dunk in the clinching game of the 1983 NBA Finals. That is a long time for the two major professional indoor teams to fall short. Comcast-Spectacor has owned the Flyers and 76ers since 1996. When you look at what has happened in the last week, you have to wonder whether it isn’t time for more profound change. Parent company Comcast is taking control of NBC Universal, one of the truly prestigious media companies in the world. Clearly, the priority there is on leveraging the company’s hold on millions of cable customers to get more control of content.Buffalo Sabres Jerseys That’s fine when we’re talking about the new season of The Biggest Loser. It doesn’t necessarily work when we’re talking about trying to be a winner in the brutally competitive world of professional sports. So what we got in the last week was the time-warp signing of Allen Iverson and yet another coaching change for the hockey team. Laviolette becomes the 16th head coach employed by Comcast-Spectacor in its 13-plus years running the two teams. Comcast-Spectacor tried to sell the Sixers a couple of years ago, but it was a half-hearted effort. It’s hard to dodge the feeling the operation is being run with the other half of the heart. But, hey, welcome to town, Peter Laviolette, and good luck. Just ignore that ticking sound.

It has been good for the long-term prognosis of the Washington Capitals that they’ve continued to win games despite a rash of injuries. It is even better that their two young sidekicks to Alex Ovechkin have proved they can take over a game when their Russian pal is not around to help. Ovechkin was ejected in the first period Monday night at Carolina, but Nicklas Backstrom helped carry the offense in a 3-2 victory against the Hurricanes. Three days later it was Alexander Semin’s turn to step into the spotlight with Ovechkin serving the first half of a two-game suspension. Semin had four points in a 6-2 pasting of Florida. So if they’re the best players on the ice [that night], there’s a good chance we’re going to win.” Ovechkin missed six games because of an upper-body strain near his left shoulder last month. It was an opportunity for supporting stars like Backstrom and Semin to move out of Ovechkin’s shadow, but they both failed to seize the opportunity. Semin had two goals (in the same game) and no assists and was a minus-2. Backstrom had no goals and four assists and also was a minus-2. Other players, such as forward Tomas Fleischmann and defenseman Brian Pothier, increased their production, and the team’s depth was the biggest reason for winning four of the six games. “I don’t know, but we were still winning,” Backstrom said of those six games. “It doesn’t matter who scores the goals or gets the points as long as we’re winning. I’m happy we’re winning. To play without Alex, it is tough, of course, but we’re trying to do the best we can.” The Caps likely will get Ovechkin back Monday against Tampa Bay and Mike Knuble for the next game, Wednesday at Buffalo. Men’s New Jersey DevilsProvided there are no more injuries, it will be a chance for the Caps to ice their top nine forwards together for the first time this season. But there is always the chance that Washington will be without their franchise player again, and it could come at a more crucial point in the season. For the Caps, it will be nice to know Backstrom and Semin will have memories of dominant performances without Ovechkin to lean on. “When we have Alex, we’re a better team, but without him we can still win games,” forward Brooks Laich said. “When Alex is out, [coach Bruce Boudreau] says, ‘Hey, Alex is out and he scores a goal a game, so somebody’s got to pick that up for him.’ Guys look upon themselves and say, ‘OK, I am going to be better tonight. It is a big game for me tonight.’ ” Semin credited some of his success Thursday to the guys he was skating with — Backstrom and Laich. It is a coalition Boudreau has called upon before, and with great results. When Washington’s offense struggled against Philadelphia in the 2008 playoffs, the newly formed line of Laich, Backstrom and Semin carried the offense and helped the Caps get back in the series. The trio saw time together again in last year’s postseason run and earlier this season when Boudreau put Ovechkin with Knuble and Brendan Morrison. New Jersey Devils Jersey“We work well together. Nick is a distributor of the puck, and [Semin] and I like to get open,” Laich said. “[Semin] especially is a shooter, and I am able to retrieve pucks and get it to those guys and go to the net. We have a little bit of everything on that line, plus we have a lot of fun on the ice. We communicate well and we’re friends, so it all works out well.” Added Backstrom: “The key is the centerman, I think. No, the coach puts us together and we work hard out there and get opportunities to score, so it is working good.”
